A Very Small Garden Party
Monday, June 7, 2010I'm restless today. I just can't make myself sit and work on anything. I think it's because I have to sit down and write checks and sort mail. I would almost rather clean bathrooms!
I thought I might have a bit of fun before work. I decided to make this small block. Just one....It's a 4" square made from our Garden Party line of fabric. Ten minutes of fun and the results are so sweet.
Here's the recipe:
Cut 3 - 1 7/8" squares each from a light and dark print.
Draw a line down the diagonal of each light square. Sew a seam on both sides, 1/4" away from the diagonal line. Cut them apart on the drawn line.
Cut 1 - 2 1/2" square each from the dark and light print. Draw a diagonal line down the center of one square. Sew on the diagonal line.
Cut 1/4" away from the diagonal line....discard the small remaining triangles.
Open all the triangles and press. (By this time, I'm starting to feel a bit more focused and relaxed.)
Cut 1 - 1 1/2" square from the light print. Sew the units together as shown above.
Cut 2 rectangles 1 1/2" x 3 1/2". Sew the block together as illustrated.
The results! A very small Garden Party block.
Now what to do with the block?
Until later,
Alma

a good job!!!
ReplyDeletevery nice ;)
ciao Maria
Love the fabric and the block. It's amazing how some time with needle, fabric and thread can soothe the soul! I think the block would look fab on top of a box. I'm getting ready to put a hexagon patch on a round box top using your 'box' finishing technique. I'll send a pic when I'm finished. Have a wonderful week!!
ReplyDeleteThe bear paw is one of my very favorite patterns, thank-you for sharing, the colors are lovely together.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work.

Funny how a bit of stitching can relax us...I went up to my sewing room today just for a bit and came down three hours later. But I did manage to get all four of my borders on the quilt! I love basket blocks..
ReplyDeleteAlma, I so enjoy your fun blog! You inspire me to find some fabric and do a bit of sewing myself.

Goodmorning! What a nice block! A good way to start my day! Hubertine
ReplyDeleteI love that fabric. It does make you feel better to take needle and thread to fabric. I am going to have to buy some of that fabric online. So very pretty.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful block and lovely colours!
ReplyDeletePretty block!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your week!

Oooohhh! I want to make a whole lot of these!! But then I'm always looking for distractions. Back to the job at hand, which is the restoration of my client's 1928 family heirloom silk crazy quilt.
ReplyDeleteLove your pictures from June show and tell too.

That tiny basket block is so cute! But it needs some friends...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tutorial!
What a fun block. I look forward to your blogposts and am also enjoying your new book "Country Inn". I do have a question about your lavender sachets - since there are no directions with that pattern, did you combine lavender and crushed walnut shells or did you use one or the other?

oops, didn't mean to comment in triplicate:)
ReplyDeleteLove the block and the Garden Party collection.
ReplyDeleteBut discard the leftover triangles? NEVER!!!! Just sew another seam a scant 1/4" on the other side of the drawn line before cutting, and you have another tiny half square triangle. Perfect for a doll quilt, pincushion, or just to pile in a small basket.
