Scalloped Border
Tuesday, March 9, 2010Today I'm cutting a scalloped border...perfect time to share my technique with you. The quilt must be quilted before cutting the scallop....otherwise it would stretch all over the place. Not a very good look. I ask my husband to draft the circular pattern for me. I then print many copies until I have enough for one length. The pattern is drafted for the top size before quilting. This top is 88" x 88". So I'm using a 8" scallop.
Of course quilting takes up a bit of fabric. So my border measures smaller than before the quilting. Look at the bottom of the top picture. Do you see the template is longer than the quilt?
To adjust the template, I make small folds. I leave the scallop the same size and fold the paper between the scallops where it won't be noticeable.
After a couple of small folds, notice the pattern now fits the border. I tape the fold so the pattern will not move.
The scallop aligns with the edge of the quilt and is pinned in place.
This was really the scary part for me the first time I cut the scallop! But it must be done. After the first one it's easier the next time.
Remove the template and go to the next border. I really like a scalloped edge. The circular pattern of the scallops gives motion and another design element to the quilt top. This quilt top was made using our new line of fabric Garden Party from Moda fabrics. Look for the pattern in our newest book Country Inn which will be released at spring market by the Kansas City Star. Click on the Star's name for more publications.
I went outside to hang up my clothes on the line...and what did I spy? I don't even remember planting these small wonders. I see my phlox awakening under the cover of leaves. Welcome Spring! It's about time.
Even the weeds growing in between the bricks on the patio bloom with minuscule blue flowers.
Hope spring is coming your way too!
Back to work!!!!

Another beautiful quilt! I can't wait to see the new book. I've never tried a scalloped edge yet, so your tutorial is great. Thanks for sharing how you do the scallops.
ReplyDeleteAlma, Can I borrow your husband to make me a templet? lol Quilt is beautiful !! Thanks for showing us how to do. Now if I could just quilt... lol
ReplyDeleteNice tutorial, makes it look easier to do.
ReplyDeleteI would like to try one, so maybe I can do a mini quilt to get the hang of it.

Thanks for the lesson on scallop borders. I have a quilt or two that call for them but really wasn't looking forward to actually doing it. Now, with your help, I'll give it a try.
ReplyDeleteSpring has finally sprung! Yipee!
Happy Stitching!
Thank you for the tutorial about the scallops. I've always liked quilts that had the scalloped border so maybe I will try it on my next quilt. I can't wait for your new book, I will be eagerly awaiting it's release!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the information about scalloped borders. It looks beautiful on your quilt. Most of all, thank you for the wonderful pictures of spring! I'm so glad it's almost here.

Oh my GOSH, that is gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteI've never made a scalloped border, but I think I see one looming in my future. I can't take my eyes off of what I can see of the quilt. Can't wait for the book to come out.
ReplyDeleteIt is a good idea to make a border, I keep it mind !!
ReplyDeleteWow, BEAUTIFUL quilt, can hardly wait to see the entire thing. It will be some time before I try a "Scalloped Border", as I'm a newbie quilter, but I think I might be able to accomplish it. Thanks for sharing.

That quilt and the fabric are gorgeous, I'll definitely be looking out for those. I've never done a scalloped border before either - too scared! Super tutorial so I might give it a try...when I get brave enough.
ReplyDeleteOh wow! That's so cool! I had no idea how to make a scallop border! Of course I'm not sure I'm daring enough to try even now. lol! Thanks for the tutorial though. I'm much more likely to try now. I love the quilt!!!! Can't wait for the book!
ReplyDeleteThank-you for doing a tutorial on scalloped borders! You made it look so much easier. I have not tried to do a scalloped border as of yet. I have done prairie points though. I look forward to seeing your new book! :0)
ReplyDeleteI have a quilt ready to go to the quilter tomorrow that is supposed to be scalloped...and I was hesitating to go that route (out of fear that I might mess it up) but I think, now that I've seen yours, that I will give it a try.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
Love the colors in your quilt!
ReplyDeleteOh my...love that quilt and the scalloped edge! Thanks for the tutorial!
ReplyDeleteNever done a scalloped border! You make it look so easy hihi! Tks so much for the tutorial and perhaps..one day...hihi! Have a nice day, hugs, Daniëlle
ReplyDeleteWow Alma: another great tip!!! So far my forays into scalloped edges on my quilts have been less than satisfactory - I can hardly wait to try again using your technique. I know it will make it so much easier for me. Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteThis quilt is just so lovely.
You make it look so easy! Thanks for the photo tutorial!!
ReplyDeleteBring on spring!!
OMG. From what I can see of your new quilt - it is gorgeous. I quickly put in an order for a fat quarter bundle of the fabric plus a few extra for the borders and will try to patiently await your new book. Thanks for all your wonderful designs and patterns.

Just wanted to say that the quilt is going to be beautiful with the scalloped border. I do a scallop on quite a few of my quilts. I found a few years ago an idea of using adding machine tape..remember that stuff on a roll? I have a master shallow scallop drawn and cut and use this as my template. It can be adjusted much the same way as you do yours by taking ever so tiny tucks in it to adjust for the length needed. I also do not cut my scallop on the quilt itself until I have sewn on the binding. This gives me a bit more of an edge to stabilize while sewing the binding on. I just know that one day my paper template is going to need replacing. Love, love love those scallops. Louise
ReplyDeleteI always admire your will to teach others. What a pretty instruction piece to demonstrate with! Praise the Lord Spring is on the way!
ReplyDeleteWhat an exquisite border for a delightful quilt. I love your nature posts too. One always looks for the beauty in all: even the weeds!.
ReplyDeleteAlma, I love the new quilt and can't wait for the book. I love how you adjusted the template to adjust. Very cool. Now I can't wait to do a scalloped border! Thanks, Stephanie
ReplyDeleteHi…can you tell me where to purchase the CZ beads for the stocking patterns?
ReplyDeleteI searched Treasure Beads online, but didn't come up with anything…
Best…

ReplyDeleteSorry, just getting started with this. My comment went up twice so I deleted one. :0( What a goof ball I am. But I DO love to quilt. :0)Maybe I am giddy because it is so sunny here today....? Love to quilt when the sun shines and when it doesn't also. Your quilts are awesome! Thank you
ReplyDeleteIn principle, a good happen, support the views of the author
ReplyDeleteA spectacular finish to a beautiful project! I am currently working on your Friends of a Feather quilt for my sisters 60th birthday! Love your designs! Thank you so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHow did you do the edging? I want to use this on a pillow case I am mkaing with this beautiful rose print.
ReplyDeleteJust found your website. Beautiful Quilt! After the quilt is quilted and you cut the template on the quilt edge, do you sew along the edge to finish it off. Seems like a step is missing in there. I'd love to try it soon!!
ReplyDeleteSeems like a step was left out. The edge ends up smooth with a top and bottom part. Did you turn the
ReplyDeletetop of the scallop to the other side and stitch down or
what? I don't see how you had a seam on the edge.
What makes the bottom of the scallop?
Do you stitch the edges together before cutting the scallops or after? How do you do that, especially with the quilting going right to the edge of the border?
ReplyDeleteWhere are the answers to these questions? I've been all over the blog and the blog authors don't appear to have replied. The scalloped border post should have been modified to include details of how to finish off the edge.
DeleteSo glad your mini tutorial on a scallop border popped up in my search. I had done one before but was looking for something easier. Thank you for taking time to share :-).

Doesn't anybody monitor this blog? There is a lot of spam on here.
ReplyDeleteSince it seems no one is monitoring, there is an easier way to do this that doesn't require and math or an engineering husband. http://lasewist.blogspot.com/2012/02/home-dec-returns.html
ReplyDeleteI've used it and feel very satisfied. I can get in touch with your friends wherever they are far, my work also need it so much.

I would like to how you finish the edge of scollop.because when you cut the scallop shape you will have raw edges or am I missing something!!!!
ReplyDeleteI have made a paper pattern to use for a scalloped edge on my quilts. I used some adding machine tape and it has held up beautifully after many uses. It is really slick!
